Last year we were approached by The Northern College to help them on a refurbishment project. They needed support and assistance to implement a variety of audio visual equipment for an interactive meeting room and their new digital learning hub which was formerly their library.

Northern College is an adult residential college located within the Grade I listed Wentworth Castle in Barnsley, the college offers a variety of courses, including English, math, digital skills, and health sciences. The college also offers courses in community and social action, counselling, and mental health education.

Northern College – Transforming Learning Spaces with Posynergi

The Challenge
Northern College wanted to create a learning environment that catered to the diverse needs of its students. The previous space, while functional, was quite open and could feel intimidating for some learners. There was a clear need for a solution that balanced collaboration with individual focus while providing modern, flexible access to resources.

The Solution
Posynergi worked closely with Northern College and Storah Architects to help to implement a digital transformation of their learning spaces, integrating technology to enhance accessibility and engagement. The redesign included flexible areas for group work, quiet zones for individual study, and self-serve access to the library’s digital resources.

The Impact
Diane, Assistant Principal, highlighted the difference the new setup has made:

“Some of our students have very diverse needs and previously the space was quite open before and sometimes intimidating. Now we have the facility to offer our students a variety of spaces that suits their sensory needs. They can work as a group but equally they can sit on their own whilst still feeling part of the team.”

She also emphasised the benefits of the college’s digital transformation:

“Following our digital transformation, our students can access the library 24 hours a day with the added benefit of self-serve to access our resources — it makes things so much easier.”

Outcome
The project has transformed the student experience, providing adaptable, supportive learning spaces while leveraging technology to give learners greater autonomy and flexibility. Northern College now has a modern, inclusive environment where all students can thrive.
